Aug 1998 to Mar 2009 Encocam Ltd (formerly Cellbond Composites Ltd)
Key achievements:-
• Securing and managing a $4.6 AUD Million project for the manufacture, test and installation of train / rail carriage interiors for Bombardier Transportation / Virgin Rail – Catering Vehicles.
• Consistent turnover growth totalling more than 300% whilst maintaining an average gross margin in excess of 50% over a ten year period.
• Successful implementation of a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system in 2008 for use initially by Sales and Marketing, followed by all departments.
• Introduction of intelligent sales budgets, to drive the business as a whole.
• Creation of entirely new business divisions.
• Diversification.
The Encocam group is split into divisions with each division providing tailored products and services to variety of industries including Automotive, Manufacturing, Construction, Architectural, Oil and Gas.
SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR (2005 to 2009)
Ultimate role was development of new business opportunities and “heading up” projects for the group ranging from providing complex energy absorption solutions for blue chip organisations through to providing simple subcontract engineering services such as machining, fabrication, tool-making and plastic injection moulding.
A specialist in composite bonding solutions, providing design, development and testing of passive safety components primarily for the automotive industry under the CELLBOND brand.
My primary task was turning a one product, specialised manufacturer into a multi facetted organisation without reducing the market share of the core business. At the time of leaving Encocam, the Cellbond brand had been established as a world market leader in field of automotive deformable crash test barriers.
During this time I created nine unique divisions, each providing products or services such Mykon-Systems which produced architectural facades and one off pieces furniture manufactured with high technology materials. Individual divisions were developed to provide clients with a tailored service built around one company with shared values. This allowed the company to continually grow and develop through diversification without risking the original business. Year on year growth ranged from 32% to 12% for the group allowing the company to continue to prosper despite changes in the global economic climate.
Although the prime business was the export of engineering products, in 2006 a new division was created to protect and allow the business to profit from the changes worldwide currency exchange rates. Consequently income from the Far East (specifically China) was re-invested in developing and importing a range of Motorcycles for the UK market, allowing the creation of a retail business operating within the group (Zing Bikes). In 2008, the company was awarded with sole agency distribution rights for Lifan Motorcycles within the UK.
Independent recognition of success throughout the years has resulted in the company being presented with numerous awards, such as one of the Dolite & Touche, Technology 50 fastest growing companies, manufacturer of the year, and product innovation of the year.
Diversity and growth created many opportunities and allowed me to establish a global sales network by recognising that people generally prefer to do business in their own language. Consequently, I ensured that the business was supported by agents in Japan, Korea and China and opened sales offices in USA with field sales executives in Germany and Spain.
Excluding overseas agents as Sales and Marketing Director, I had a combined team of 15 staff, including three Managers, Sales Engineers, Marketing Executives and a Website Developer. This entailed annual appraisals and objective setting for staff with overall responsibility for a $13 Million AUD budget.
SPECIAL PROJECTS DIRECTOR (2003 to 2005)
In 2003, elected head of a Product Development group, leading a team of 5 multi-disciplined Mechanical and Chemical Engineers to develop and produce in-house Aluminium Honeycomb. The material had previously been a “bought in” material with an annual expenditure in excess of $2 Million AUD. Within one year the team had designed and developed not only the product itself, but much of capital equipment and plant required to process and manufacture the raw materials to create the Honeycomb. The product, a composite material called Corex-Honeycomb is now being sold throughout Europe.
This project allowed the company to become self sufficient in this important material and allowed the creation of a new successful trading division of the business.
SALES MANAGER (1999 to 2002)
In 2002, I became a Director of the company, then called Cellbond Composites Ltd.
Instrumental in the diversification of the business, being a leader in the creation of unique divisions and identities within the company serving many different industries such as Aerospace, Architectural, Digital Printing, Automotive and Rail industries.
In 2001, I was trained to become one three official company mentors, allowing me the opportunity to assist staff members in reaching their own full potential within the organisation.
In 1999, promoted to a new role as Sales Manager co-ordinating, developing and mentoring young energetic, multi-national team of graduates for Cellbond’s growing world markets. Responsible for the successful introduction of sales budgets to the business as a whole, enabling all other departments to plan, effectively and efficiently.
TECHNICAL MANAGER (1998 to 1999) (Encocam Ltd continued)
In 1998 invited to join the company to develop and implement a computerised job costing and estimation system. This task involved identification of all individual Production activities together with the setting up and monitoring efficient working practices. After six months in this role and based on my previous Production Management experience, I took over as Production Manager for an agreed period of three months whilst the Company restructured internally.
Jan 1988 to Aug 1998 Lordgate Engineering Ltd.
Key achievements:-
• As a young enthusiastic Manager, I unilaterally recognised the need to invest in new technology and prepared a written justification complete with budget costing covering the implementation of a CADCAM system to enable offline programming of CNC workshop equipment, direct from CAD drawings.
• Following a presentation to the board of Directors the proposal was approved and I was responsible for project management of the successful programme implementation.
• This project enabled the company to benefit from the removal of waste i.e. duplication of effort by Draughtspersons and CNC programmers combined with improved lead-times.
The company products and services included Precision Engineering, Airline in-flight catering equipment, rail-rolling stock interiors / train doors, medical and printing equipment.
TECHNICAL MANAGER (1994 to 1998)
Reporting directly to the Production Director and Managing Director on all aspects of Design and Manufacture, I also had overall responsibility for Estimating, Internal Sales, sourcing of new materials, sub-contract services such as composite bonding and finishing requirements on all new projects.
As Technical Manager the role involved a great deal of direct communication and liaison with clients relating to all technical and financial aspects of projects.
Project Management experience including areas of sub-contract activity, such as electronic/electrical installation, finite element analysis and environmental testing.
CHIEF DRAUGHTSMAN (1990 to 1994)
Promoted to Chief Draughtsman in 1990 my responsibilities included control and organisation of a small project team, covering all aspects associated with design support to all engineering departments, including CAD (AutoCad) drawings, CAM programming of manufacturing equipment plus providing estimated production times for all products, together with scheduling for manufacture and providing delivery commitments.
Self imposed champion of IT, promoting and introducing new computerised technologies and procedures for all departments. The new systems provided vital management information with enhanced estimating, job costing, purchasing, stock control and production planning activities.
MECHANICAL DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (1988 to 1990)
Initially employed in 1988 as a Mechanical Design Draughtsman preparing both conceptual design and fully concise, detailed, accurate manufacturing drawing packages in accordance with recognised standards (such as BS308 and BS499) supported where necessary with component maintenance manuals to ATA 100, covering manufactured equipment.
I also possess a good appreciation of the application of materials in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Fully conversant with current workshop processes and equipment such as CNC Punch Press, CNC Press Brake, CNC Milling and welding etc.
In addition I was responsible for ensuring that company procedures comply with the requirements of the C.A.A (Civil Aviation Authority) and J.A.R regulations relating to air-worthiness, together with the Quality Assurance commitments of ISO 9000, undertaking strategic planning as part of the Management Review Team.
Aug 1979 to Jan 1988 Marshall Specialist Vehicles Ltd.
(Formerly Marshall of Cambridge Engineering Ltd)
The company designed, developed and manufactured specialist vehicles for a variety of industries from support vehicles for the armed forces to curtain sided vehicles for UK brewers together with unique rapid demountable installations providing communications, field hospitals and even a mobile bakery.
ASSISTANT PROJECT MANAGER (1985 to 1988)
In 1985 promoted to the position of Assistant Project Manager. Responsibilities included day to day control of Design and Development projects, Post Design Services and Modification / Repair Contracts, allied to MoD activities. Co-ordination of the workload and content of Design Draughtspersons and Technical Authors, together with progress and reporting of project status to MoD departments and representatives.
Ensuring compliance with the requirements of appropriate standards such as DEF STAN 05-10 (Drawing Procedure) and DEF STAN 05-21 (Quality Assurance).
DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (1983 to 1985)
Design Experience in electronic packaging, sheet-metal fabrications, welded assemblies, presswork and machining including an understanding of design constraints affecting EMP / RFI and Tempest screening of electronic equipment. Originally trained in manual hand drafting techniques, progressing to CAD (Computer Aided Design) using Medusa drafting system.
APPRENTICE VEHICLE BODY DRAUGHTSMAN / TECHNICIAN (1979 to 1983)
