November 2007-Present: WS Atkins& Partners Overseas (U.A.E),
Resident Engineer (reporting to Operations Director), working on an iconic project “Hills Abu Dhabi” , a mixed use development comprising of 147 high profile villas, hotel, recreation building, marine works, water features, infrastructure& road works (USD185 million construction package); Concurrently, working as Projects Control Manager of the Project Management Office that manages Atkins portfolios in Abu Dhabi, the portfolio includes projects as Hilton Hotel (USD420 million); Bridge way tower (mixed development of hotel and residential USD 380 million); Al Jazeera Tower (USD160 million), Tasameem Tower (USD140 Million), EPIC Tower (USD 186 million).
Feb. 1997- June 2007: ECG Engineering Consultants Group (Egypt),
For ECG, I started with ECG as internship during my engineering study then gradually was being promoted from project coordinator, subsequently then was assigned to two iconic projects in managerial roles (Cairo Airport TB3 and the Children’s Oncology Hospital)
Cairo Airport T3 – Construction Manager: A USD 450 Million multi-culture project, partially financed by the World Bank. The new terminal is designed to receive the new Airbus A380 and serve as hub in the region for an average of 11 million passengers per year. The terminal building is on two levels, with mezzanine levels for offices, aerodrome operations and mechanical areas directly connecting to the south by the concourse. In the basement is the baggage handling system and the sorting hall, and the concourse houses a 3000 sq. m Duty Free shopping area. Finishes were to the highest standard and comprised of glass façades, plastering, glass building blocks, curtain walling, G.R.C. paneling, composite roof cladding, marble and granite floors, architectural steel railings and elements, and profiled ceilings.
Children’s Cancer Hospital – Resident Engineer: A USD 216 Million (Architectural works only) the project was a state of art cancer treatment hospital (185-beds hospital for children’s treatment of Cancer, 38.900 sq. m of floor area consisting of a seven-storey tower integrated with a four storey diagnostic & research building;
Responsible for overseeing the project various activities (especially the hazardous/ red zones of the hospital) , administration of the Contract , certifying the Contractor’s interim payments, evaluation of the variations, assessment and certifying the contractor claims, assurance of the works are in compliance to the project specifications, intensive value engineering in regard to the materials and equipments used, review & monitor the Contract program and compliance to the fast track requirement of the Client, chair the stakeholders meetings and liaise& manage the hospital operator in the regard to their particular requirements/ adjustments in the design and accommodate it during the construction.
Project Coordinator –on two different projects in the Smart village, the Pavilion building and Ministry of Communication Headquarters; my assignment as project coordinator was the first professional step in implementation of my qualification in project management, my assignment came subsequent to my extensive internship with ECG which was of great benefit to my career, in my training I experienced the whole life cycle and the various aspects of a construction project:
- Started from the business development department (experienced management of potential clients, client requirements, proposals, project initiation, etc)
- Design Management (which included analysis of the clients requirements, concepts & design developments with all interrelations involved i.e. coordination& inputs of the different engineering disciplines, specifications writing – mainly were inherited from the ASTM American standards however the BS were frequently used– , etc)
- Tendering and contracts (experienced the process of preparation of tender documents, evaluation of bidders’ technical and financial submissions, preparation of contracts with its general and particulars conditions – mainly the contracts was adopting FIDIC contracts–, preparation of the other contract documents and to the awarding of contract)
- Construction ( experienced the post contract phase, implementation of the contract preliminaries onwards – mobilization, enabling works, etc.; on the site I have experienced both the technical and contractual sides, contractor’s miscellaneous submissions and contractually I have experienced the contract administration arena such as but limited to the quantity surveying, interim payments, variations, claims, etc)
