Summary |
I STARTED MY CAREER AS A STRUCTURAL DETAIL DRAFTSMAN, THEN MOVED ON TO DESIGN DRAFTING - I DID THIS FOR CLOSE TO 8 YEARS AND THIS EXPERIENCE HAS GIVEN ME A BACKGROUND THAT MANY DESIGNERS IN MY DISCIPLINE DO NOT POSSESS, AND I THOUGHT IN THOSE EARLY DAYS THAT IT COMES VERY HANDY TO CHECK A DRAWING OR WALK ONTO A SITE AND CONSIDER BOTH STRUCTURAL AND PIPING ISSUES SIMULTANEOUSLY.
I HAD ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN THE PIPING DISCIPLINE AND IN 1982 I WAS LUCKY TO FIND A JOB AS AN ISOMETRICIAN. THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY MY FIRST FIELD TRIP, THE NORTH WEST SHELF DOMGAS PROJECT AND I WAS TOTALLY CAPTIVATED BY THE OIL AND GAS ENVIRONMENT.
FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS I CONCENTRATED ON IMPROVING MY TECHNICAL ABILITY. MY NEXT HIGHLIGHT WAS ANOTHER LONG TERM TRIP TO THE NORTH WEST SHELF THIS TIME ON TRAIN 1 WORKING AS A FIELD ENGINEER, WHERE I CAME ACROSS SUCH TASKS AS REPORTING, MONITORING, INSPECTING, LIAISING WITH THE CLIENT, EXPEDITING MATERIALS AND FINALLY A LONG STINT ON HYDROTESTING AND COMMISSIONING.
THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A VARIETY OF INTERESTING AND REWARDING PROJECTS. I WORKED ON BOTH THE CONSULTANCY AND CONSTRUCTION PHASES OF THE GOODWYN ‘A’ OFFSHORE PLATFORM, THEN ONTO THE BP OIL REFINERY AS A FIELD ENGINEER, ANOTHER STINT IN THE LNG PLANT WITH FREQUENT TRIPS TO THE RANKIN ‘A’ PLATFORM, ONE YEAR ON THE DESIGN OF THE JAKRAWAN PROCESS PLATFORM, BACK TO THE BP OIL REFINERY – I PARTICULARLY ENJOYED MY TIME IN THE REFINERY, ONE OF MY PROJECTS OVER SIX MONTHS WAS THE SINGLE HANDED DESIGN FOR A MAJOR SHUTDOWN, WHEN THIS STARTED I WAS AMAZED TO SEE OVER 200 PEOPLE RUSHING OVER MY DRAWINGS, THE SHUTDOWN WAS COMPLETED TWO DAYS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, THERE WAS A HUGE SAVING IN BUDGET AND I REGARD THIS AS ONE OF MY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS. ALL THESE PROJECTS WERE FUNDAMENTAL TO ME AND LAYED THE FOUNDATION OF MY OIL AND GAS ONSHORE/OFFSHORE/REFINERY KNOWLEDGE BASE.
MY NEXT CONTRACT WAS FOR BROWN AND ROOT ENG. WHERE I BECAME A DESIGNATED CHECKER AND WAS INTRODUCED TO PDMS SOFTWARE. AFTER THAT I WORKED ON THE COSSACK PIONEER FPSO, ONE OF MY ASSIGNMENTS WAS THE FIREWATER UPGRADE, A VERY HECTIC FIVE MONTHS WHERE I SPENT EVERY WEEKEND ON BOARD, SITE SURVEYING FROM THE ENGINE ROOM TO MAIN DECK PUMP SKID, AND THE NEXT FIVE DAYS TRANSFERRING ALL FINDINGS INTO FINISHED DESIGN, MOST ENJOYABLE AND REWARDING. WORKING FOR THE WOOD GROUP, I BECAME A SQUAD LEADER, INVOLVED IN PLANT LAYOUT AND ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES IN DEALING WITH PEOPLE. THE NEXT PROJECT I WENT BACK TO WORKING ON AN OFFSHORE PLATFORM AT THE END OF WHICH, I WAS CHOSEN BY THE CLIENT, JAPAN VIETNAM PETROLEUM, TO BE THE SITE PIPING DESIGNER ON THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE IN INDONESIA. ON MY RETURN, I WORKED ON PDS AT WORLEYPARSONS, CHECKING EQUIPMENT MODELLING AND CLASH CHECKING.
FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS I HAVE WORKED OVERSEAS, THREE YEARS WITH WORLEYPARSONS AS A DESIGN SUPERVISOR/SENIOR DESIGNER ON PDS AND CURRENTLY WITH CLOUGH ZUHAIR FAYEZ AS A LEAD PIPING DESIGNER. BOTH COMPANIES HAVE PROVIDED AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCE FOR ME IN DEALING WITH THE SAUDI ARAMCO SYSTEM.
AFTER ALL THESE YEARS I CAN STILL SAY THAT I FIND THE PIPING DISCIPLINE TO BE SO VARIED, INTERESTING AND MOST CHALLENGING – I HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN PART OF IT.
